The Cuchara Valley Ranch is situated at the base of the lush Cuchara River Valley and nestled between the eastern slopes of the southern Sangre de Cristo Range (referred to as the Culebra Range), and the twin Spanish Peaks in south-central Colorado. This 1,290 acre (deeded) private ranch with sweeping views is comprised of one contiguous block, and is eight miles south of La Veta. The ranch contains a mixture of montane shrublands and grasslands, scrub oak, irrigated meadows, riparian woodlands and montane and subalpine forests of aspen, pines, spruce and fir trees. This property also includes a grazing lease of approximately 3,427 acres of adjoining San Isabel National Forest lands.

Elevations on the ranch range from 8,100 ft. to 9,100 ft.

Access from Interstate 25 is via U.S. Highway 160 to La Veta. Go south on State Highway 12 approximately eight miles to the ranch entrance on the east side of the highway. The ranch is located approximately 175 miles from Denver, 1.5 hours from Colorado Springs and Taos, and three hours from Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Improvements
The ranch has a nice two-bedroom home situated along the Cucharas River near the ranch entrance. There is a recently renovated historic barn with corrals near the fishing pond. The current owner recently installed new buck fencing near the barn and around the lower irrigated meadows. The ranch also offers a rustic cabin situated in an alpine setting near the waterfall along Chaparral Creek. A number of improved roads and trails on the ranch provide unlimited access to the property and surrounding National Forest lands.

History
The area is rich in scenic beauty and unique history dating back to the Comanche and Ute Indians as well as the Spanish Conquistadors who named the Sangre de Cristo (“Blood of Christ”) mountain range. The Sangres are one of the longest mountain chains on earth with ten peaks over 14,000 feet high and over two dozen rising 13,000 feet. This area was once part of an original Spanish land grant that stretched to Kansas and contained over 4 million acres. The valley provides a unique mixture of working ranches while also retaining its Hispanic heritage which dates back over 150 years. The original adobe Francisco Fort founded by Colonel Francisco in the 1860s still stands in the middle of La Veta along its many tree shaded streets. The fort served as a trading post and later became the focal point of the town of La Veta incorporated in 1876. The town was aptly named “the Vein” for the long dikes that radiate down from the Spanish Peaks. Branches of the historic Santa Fe Trail are located nearby.

The ranch is situated along the Highway of Legends, an 82 mile two-lane scenic byway that roller coasters its way through picturesque farms and ranchland. The ranch provides stunning views of the Spanish Peaks rising nearly 7,000 feet above the surrounding landscape to 13,626 feet. The Spanish Peaks sitting majestically by themselves east of the Continental Divide, were formed by masses of molten igneous rock millions of years ago. These peaks have been among the most important landmarks of the southwestern United States, guiding Native American tribes, Spanish and French trappers, gold seekers, hunters, and American settlers. Travelers from the east see these peaks from as far as 100 miles away. The Ute, Comanche, Apache, and other, earlier Native American tribes held the Peaks in religious awe and named the mountains Wahatoya, meaning "Breasts of the Earth."

When the Peaks were formed, magma also surged upward into cracks in the ground and hardened. Over time, the softer sediments surrounding the hardened magma wore away, leaving giant walls called dikes. There are dozens of these lava dikes ranging from a few inches wide to 30 feet thick and up to 100 feet high that radiate from the two peaks and stretch over 14 miles. These formations are known as the most spectacular display of radial dikes in the US and many of these dikes actually crisscross the ranch. There are some 40 separate dikes identified in the area.

Another interesting geologic break formation, known as the Dakota Sandstone Wall, is situated on the ranch. This "break" in the North American continent stretches from Canada to Mexico along the fault line that marks the eastern edge of the upthrust that created the ancestral Rocky Mountains some 65 million years ago. This sandstone was originally deposited on an ocean bottom and compressed over time by the weight of layers of rock, gravel and stone deposited above it. While this exceptionally hard layer of sandstone was tilted upright when the ancestral mountains were first pushed up, those softer mountains have mostly eroded away and left only these vertical walls behind in testament to their passing. The ranch also boasts “The Gap” which is break in the Wall created over the years by the Cucharas River.

Locale
The town of La Veta, with a population of approximately 900, features restaurants, a medical center, schools, galleries, antique stores, coffee shops, hardware and grocery stores, bakeries, motels, a museum, a library, and a post office. Adjoining town along the Cucharas River is the 18-hole Grandote Peaks Golf Club, a Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish designed championship golf course that was named a “four star award winner” by Golf Digest. La Veta hosts numerous music/arts festivals, rodeos, and other special events throughout the year. The La Veta airport is situated one mile north of town at an elevation of 7,153 feet. The runway is 5,798 feet by 60 feet, open to the public, and has jet fuel available. Commercial air service is available at Pueblo Memorial Airport, the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport and Denver International Airport.
