History
The Alamosa River was historically impacted by the Summitville Mine disaster in the 1980s–90s which happened upstream of Terrace Reservoir. Decades of federal, state, and community-led restoration have revitalized the river corridor. In the 2000s, a major project, funded by the Terrace Irrigation Company, Colorado Water Conservation Board, and Natural Resource Damage settlement funds, rebuilt the spillway and formally allocated this capacity to support seasonal flows in the Alamosa River. Since approximately 2014, stored water has been strategically released to sustain flows in critical periods, extending habitat and aquifer health—especially during previously dry late-fall months.
This property benefits from that legacy, sitting in a revitalized stretch where fish and wildlife have returned. The property benefits from stocking that has occurred on neighboring ranches and recent surveys have found young and juvenile fish, indicating that the river does support natural recruitment.
