Location
Situated between the Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Mountains, near Encampment and Saratoga, Wyoming, with the Encampment River within 10 minutes.
Locale
Encampment is a small historic town of roughly 450 residents in Carbon County, Wyoming, forty miles south of Interstate 80 and about 85 miles west of Laramie. Known also as “Grand Encampment”, the town was a booming center of copper mining and smelting around the turn of the twentieth century, reflected on the ranch’s own former railway grade. Nearby Saratoga, the area’s slightly larger hub, had a population of about 1,700 as of the 2020 census and carries the town motto “Where The Trout Leap In Main Street,” a nod to the region’s Blue Ribbon fisheries. The immediate area is home to three of the American West’s most celebrated ranches: Brush Creek Ranch, an award-winning luxury resort on 30,000+ acres; A Bar A Ranch, one of the nation’s oldest and largest guest ranches at nearly 100,000 acres; and Silver Spur Ranch, a major cattle operation and outfitter renowned for its Blue Ribbon fishing and big-game hunting, placing Stonegate at the heart of one of Wyoming’s most prestigious ranching corridors. Laramie, roughly 90 minutes away, is home to the University of Wyoming and sits about 50 miles west of Cheyenne, the state capital, and 130 miles north of Denver, Colorado. Private and charter aircraft can fly directly into the Saratoga Airport, just 4 miles gate-to-gate from the property, with commercial service available through Laramie Regional Airport and Denver International Airport serving as the primary commercial gateway into the region.
History
The property is crossed by the former grade of the Saratoga/Encampment Railroad, which hauled copper from area mines in the late 1800s–early 1900s. The Encampment River was featured in Ray Bergman’s 1937 book Trout, and the pools, rocks, and eddies he described remain on the river today.
Climate
The area enjoys a four-season mountain climate typical of high-elevation southern Wyoming. Summers are long and pleasant with average highs near 90°F, while winters bring cold temperatures with lows typically in the 10 to 20°F range. The region enjoys abundant sunshine, averaging around 300 days of sun per year, with moderate annual precipitation and periodic heavier mountain snowfall, ideal conditions for four-season recreation.
