This has been a strong season for fishing at Elk Creek. With higher than normal snowpack, the flows have been above average for most of the season, providing consistent fishing conditions and a healthy river. Runoff peaked in early June at around 2600 CFS, which is slightly higher than the historic median.
The high water in early summer brought its own set of challenges, but the fishing remained solid. We experienced a large caddis hatch, along with some PMDs and green drakes. Although we saw a significant number of salmonflies in May, the high water kept the trout from looking up for them. During early summer, many members take refuge from the high water on the White River and fish Elk Creek, where runoff conditions are less severe. Additionally, the still water fishing on the ponds at the ranch can provide great fishing for large trout when early season river conditions make fishing more difficult.
Late summer is one of the most popular times to fish at Elk Creek, and for good reason. Trout have started focusing on terrestrials, with PMDs continuing to hatch consistently and a few caddis still present. As the caddis and drake hatches have subsided, fish are actively targeting larger dry fly patterns, resulting in excellent surface action from large fish. Although early season water levels were higher than normal, the hot weather has led to lower than usual river flows at this time of year. With over 30 miles of private and controlled access, Elk Creek effectively manages fishing pressure, allowing members to fully enjoy the resource even as warmer water temperatures come into play.
The terrestrial fishing on the White River has been exceptional in the last few weeks, and is one of the largest draws for members at Elk Creek. Fishing with small grasshopper, stimulator or beetle patterns, paired with a small nymph below, has brought consistent success across the White River, South Fork and Elk Creek. Many members stick with a single dry fly at this time of year and are met with consistent results.
Owners at Elk Creek Ranch have enjoyed an excellent summer of fishing thus far. The 30 miles of diverse and private river and stream systems on the White, Elk Creek, South Fork, and numerous ponds offer memorable days from the high flows of early summer through the fall, making Elk Creek the preeminent fishing destination in the US. Trout populations continue to flourish through careful resource management, and sets the ownership up for many successful seasons to come. Explore ownership opportunities at this link.
As summer comes to a close and the ranch gears up for hunting season, fall months can offer the best fishing of the year. Browns begin to spawn, bringing out some of the biggest fish in the river and the baetis hatch becomes a mainstay. Fall is a personal favorite season at Elk Creek, with cooler temperatures and the anticipation of elk hunting season creating a unique and memorable experience.
