New Mexico tax credit for land conservation
New Mexico continues to support land conservation through tax incentives available under the New Mexico Land Conservation Incentives Act and related programs. These incentives are designed to encourage landowners to place conservation easements on their properties, helping protect working lands, wildlife habitat, and open space across the state.
Qualified landowners may receive a state income tax credit based on a percentage of the donated conservation value. In many cases, these credits are transferable, allowing landowners to realize financial benefit even if they cannot fully utilize the credit themselves – making conservation easements a more practical option for farmers and ranchers. Credit limits, eligibility, and transferability are subject to current state guidelines and should be reviewed carefully with a qualified advisor.
Organizations such as the New Mexico Land Conservancy, Taos Land Trust, and Quivira Coalition play an important role in helping landowners navigate the conservation process, from easement structuring to long-term stewardship. For landowners considering conservation, these programs continue to provide meaningful financial incentives while ensuring the long-term protection of New Mexico’s landscapes.
