As part of our 20th anniversary celebration, we’re highlighting some of the most memorable ranch sales in Mirr Ranch Group history. This month, we’re proud to feature the 2022 sale of one of Colorado’s most significant legacy properties: JE Canyon Ranch.

Spanning nearly 50,000 deeded acres in southeastern Colorado’s canyon country, JE Canyon Ranch is not only one of the largest private ranches in the state – it’s also one of the most biologically diverse. With more than 55 miles of canyons, nine miles of the Purgatoire River, and a staggering 865 species of plants and animals identified, this is a place where cultural heritage, ecological richness, and agricultural productivity intersect.
It’s also a place that demanded the right buyer.
JE Canyon was more than a cattle operation. It was a living archive of prehistoric rock art, dinosaur tracks, and abandoned settlements. It supported trophy herds of bighorn sheep, mule deer, and elk, while also operating as a sustainable working ranch with extensive infrastructure, rotational grazing, and a water system spanning over 50 miles.
The seller was a dedicated steward of the land and committed to protecting this landscape for future generations. With that vision in mind, Mirr Ranch Group worked to identify a buyer that could both continue the ranching tradition and preserve the property’s natural and cultural integrity.

We found that buyer in The Nature Conservancy.
The Nature Conservancy had been watching JE Canyon for two decades. When the opportunity came to acquire the property, they partnered with generous supporters, local experts, and conservation organizations to make it happen. The $21 million deal was recognized as the Ranchland Deal of the Year by The Land Report – and with good reason.
With the sale, the entire ranch was placed under conservation easement, ensuring permanent protection of its ecological and agricultural values. The Nature Conservancy now manages the ranch in partnership with a local cattle operator, using the land as a “living laboratory” to study sustainable ranching and conservation practices in the western Great Plains.
From the sweeping grasslands and dramatic red rock canyons to the ancient cultural sites and thriving wildlife, JE Canyon is a rare and irreplaceable landscape. Its protection not only honors the vision of the previous owner, but it also sets a precedent for what can happen when conservation, agriculture, and legacy ownership align.
At Mirr Ranch Group, we’re proud to have played a role in this historic transaction. It’s the kind of deal that defines why we do what we do – and why protecting the West’s most important landscapes will always be at the heart of our work.
