Big Red Creek Ranch: A Working Cattle Ranch South of Casper Just Re-Listed
Mirr Ranch Group presents Big Red Creek Ranch, a working cattle operation in Natrona County, Wyoming, listed at $3,500,000. Spanning 8,940.45± total acres, it pairs 943± deeded acres with BLM and State of Wyoming grazing leases. The ranch supports approximately 440 cow/calf pairs from May through October and sits about 40 minutes from Casper.
A grazing operation with new bones
Alongside the deeded ground runs the leased range: 4,363± BLM acres carrying 823 AUMs under a single allotment, and 3,634.65± State of Wyoming acres carrying 816 AUMs across five leases. Access is two miles off State Highway 487 via County Road 505. Our guide to buying a ranch with a public land lease covers what to check.
The improvements are new. A 50′ x 100′ hangar and shop stands behind a 40′ x 18′ automatic airplane door, along with a 40′ x 64′ barn with a tack room, and corrals near the building compound. A domestic and livestock well is in, with underground utilities being extended to the property.
There is also room to grow. Two adjoining Mirr Ranch Group listings extend the opportunity: Thieves’ Den Ranch, an expansion path to a combined operation of about 580 cow/calf pairs year-round, and Upper Big Red Creek Ranch, 520± deeded acres on Muddy Mountain. The three properties are also offered in combination.
The seller will convey any owned mineral rights, and the ranch carries no conservation easement.

Bates Hole country, with the tags to hunt it
The ranch was part of the Cheney family ranch in the Bates Hole community, and Bob Cheney bought it from his parents in 1987. The family was known for ranching, rodeo, and an early embrace of aircraft for ranch work.
By the time the railroad arrived and Casper was founded in 1888, the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails had already crossed this country along the North Platte.
The hunting comes with landowner tags: two permits for elk in Unit 19, two for antelope in Unit 32, and tags for mule deer and whitetail in Unit 66. Wild turkeys concentrate along the Big Red Creek riparian corridor.
Off the ranch, the Blue Ribbon North Platte River is within reach at Greys Reef and Miracle Mile, with Alcova and Pathfinder reservoirs nearby. The ranch lies on the backside of Muddy Mountain, on the northern range of the Laramie Mountains. Trails for riding, mountain biking, hiking, and ATVs run across Casper Mountain, Muddy Mountain, and BLM land.
In his notes on the listing, Jared Souza, Senior Vice President at Mirr Ranch Group, points to the “dual benefit of vast acreage and convenient proximity to Casper.” The ranch, he writes, “boasts incredible scenery, production potential, and recent agricultural enhancements.”
